My name is Adam Dowdy, and I have umpired at every level of baseball for more than 30 years combined. I have also instructed numerous camps and clinics across the country. My umpire journey began in my teens as a part-time summer job. I attended the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring as a student in 1995, then I spent another 9 years instructing at the Academy. I was blessed with an unforgettable 14-year professional umpiring career that included 7 years as a major league fill-in where I learned various philosophies from some of the best umpires ever. Having spent the last 16 years as a NCAA D1 college umpire, including assignments to 4 NCAA Men's College World Series since 2017, I have spoken with hundreds of developing umpires at all levels who want to know what it's like to work on the big stage and, more importantly, what they need to do to be considered for the next big assignment.
On the surface, umpiring is as simple as putting your eyes in the best place to see each play, but there is an expected amount of training and development required; some mental and situational aspects of umpiring go much deeper. With baseball experiencing a shortage of officials in recent years, now is the perfect time to give back to the game and ensure baseball survives and thrives. I hope to share the knowledge and experience of our staff with those who want to learn. We merge technology with the art and science of umpiring into a simple, accessible training program for everyone. Whether trying to get your start or catch a coordinator's eye, we want to prepare you for success, both on and off the field. Umpire Focus is here for you.
Our camp staff is tailored to not only the size of the camp, but more importantly to the needs of the campers. Having a diverse, well-qualified group of umpire instructors is important, but also having quality instructors who umpire at the top of their respective divisions who can clearly articulate the Umpire Focus philosophies is parament to your success at the camp and beyond. We are proud of the accolades our instructors have earned at all levels of baseball. Our staff has two things in mind: giving you more than you expect and helping you achieve your umpire goals.
Think about this question -- Where would you rather make mistakes: in a training environment or in the biggest game of your life? At Umpire Focus, we believe the best way for an umpire to learn is to make mistakes and to be open to positive, constructive feedback. We believe details matter. We believe well done is better than well said, and attitude is everything. If you have a desire to learn and improve, you will be a terrific fit for Umpire Focus camps and training programs. We want to build your confidence and skillset through repetition and deep dive discussion on all facets of umpiring.
"I couldn’t be more excited about Adam Dowdy’s Umpire Focus instructional clinics. While his experience is impressive enough, he’s also a proven, caring, and passionate umpire trainer. I’ve been extremely fortunate to get to know him and benefit directly from his guidance in past camps. I’m still striving to get more of his instinctual umpiring skills to rub off on me. Adam will work you hard and give it to you straight; the way it should be in my view. He also knows how to put together an outstanding instructional team that will benefit you best. My umpire career has advanced very nicely since first meeting Adam."

"The instruction and mentorship of Adam Dowdy, and the staff of Umpire Focus, has been instrumental in the progression and development in my umpiring career.
Under (Umpire Focus) staff guidance, I have been able to hone my skills to be afforded the opportunity to work a full [college] schedule as well as postseason assignments at many different levels. The level of instruction and experience is second to none, and the attention to detail cannot be matched."

"If you’re looking for superior instruction, guidance, and support, look no further than Umpire Focus. I was quickly impressed with the high level of professionalism demonstrated via 1-on-1 online video training. Adam incorporated visual PowerPoint presentations along with video to create teaching material that was informative, interactive, and engaging. Even though nothing beats “in game” experience, I felt like this program prepared me very well for my first ever umpiring assignments (in 2022) and, more importantly, put me in a position to succeed long term."
